Research Assistant Positions for Ph.D. and M.S. students are available
in the National Center for Data Mining (NCDM) at UIC.
Director: Dr. Robert Grossman, MSCS and Computer Science.
We do research in the field of high performance networking, distributed
data mining and standards development. Students from MSCS, CS, BioE and
ECE are currently working together in the lab on multidisciplinary
research projects.
We are currently looking for bioinformatics programmers to work on a number of
Systems Biology projects. The major responsibilities include database
programming and population, web interface design and development, and
biological data analysis pipeline development. Students are encouraged to
conduct algorithmic studies on the complex data we have.
Requirements:Proficient in C, C++, Java, perl or python, and solid
experience in Linux/Unix Systems, web development and database programming
(MySQL or similar). Excellent communication skills. Biology domain knowledge is
a big plus.

Summer 2009 Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Computer Science
Sponsored by The National Center for Data Mining at UIC & The National Science
Foundation.
The National Center for Data Mining at UIC is hosting a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).
Students will work on research projects using clouds for high performance computing, for applications in
genomics and systems biology.

Student System Administrator position available
Graduate and undergraduate students may apply. Hourly position 15-25
hrs/week. May be upgraded to an assistantship.
Required Skills:
- High skill level with most Unix/Linux commands and utilities.
- Very comfortable with most aspects of the Unix/Linux operating system:
paging/swapping, inter-process communication, devices and device driver
fundamentals, file system concepts like inode and superblock, and able to
perform system analysis and tuning.
- Familiar with fundamental networking/distributed computing environments
and concepts. Can configure Web, FTP, NFS and LDAP servers. Able to setup
firewalls with ipf[w] and iptables, and to debug DNS issues.
- Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environments,
understanding the principals of routing and client/server programming.
- Ability to write detailed scripts in at least one, preferably two
administrative languages, (e.g., Sh, Perl, Python).
- Ability to perform at least minimal debugging and modification of C
programs.
- Experience managing MS-Windows workstations. Able to protect them against
intrusion, able to audit and rebuild.
Duties: Install, maintain, upgrade and troubleshoot system software and
hardware. Monitor and resolve local and wide area system/network problems.
Maintain web server. Carry out day-to-day system administration tasks,
including system tuning and optimization to assure best server performance
and availability. Design and implement quality control measures for web
site's overall performance and reliability. Maintain network security.
Requirements: Proficient in any or all of the following: Sh, Perl, Python,
JavaScript, SVG.

National Center for Data Mining at UIC
Student programmer - Positions available.
Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
Hourly positions only (no tuition/fee waiver).
Position is perfect for undergraduates who would like to work 10-20 hours
per week.
Projects include developing server side applications in Perl/Python/Php,
writing Ajax web applications, developing networking and data mining software
in C/C++/Python, and Linux/OSX/FreeBSD junior system administration.
